Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Prototype Enemies
These enemies could be found in a disk that was meant to be used with the Digitizers. Digitizer pics courtesy of Tom Payne. |
1.Gator | |

Date: | April 2, 1992 |
As seen in Brenda Ross' concept art.![]() All their data minus their real colors are present in the prototype. This is the palette they were supposed to use: ![]() |
2.Wasp | |
![]() |
|
The wasp was originally intended to have one more animation frame that was possibly dropped just to save some VRAM space. Also, the fireballs were bigger than in the final game, something that could be seen in an old Emerald Hill mockup.![]() Except for these changes, the graphics in the prototype are identical. ![]() However, they were changed again before the final release of the game. Regarding this, Tom Payne said: "I think Yamaguchi touched up the Wasp at some point. But he touched up everything-- quite an amazing artist." ![]() |
3.Dinosaur | |
![]() |
|
These are known for appearing in a Hidden Palace mockup and, as well as happens with the gators, their code and graphics lie inside the prototype.![]() This is the palette they used: ![]() |
4.Ball | |
DIGITIZER IMAGE NOT AVAILABLE
Only its graphics could be found inside the prototype, here they are using the triceratops palette:![]() |
5.Mother Bubbler | |
DIGITIZER IMAGE NOT AVAILABLE
![]() This three-eyed fish spawned "Bubbler" enemies from the sparks it dropped. Only its graphics could be recovered (the palette in the above pic was made up based on the triceratops colors). |
6.Bubbler | |

Their graphics could also be found in the prototype (in this case, the second Emerald Hill palette was applied):![]() They acted in a similar way to the rocks with eyes in Sonic 3's Lava Reef: First they're disguised as background, then their eyes appear before they finally explode and drop four small objects. ![]() |
7.Snail | |
![]() |
|
These suffered many changes before being replaced by the monkeys in Emerald Hill, but they always made use of two different palettes: one for the body and one for the shell.![]() ![]() The original concept was more similar to the snails that could be seen in Sonic 3. ![]() |
8.Sandcrab | |
DIGITIZER IMAGE NOT AVAILABLE
It was probably the following early version of the Casino Night crabs, whose graphics could also be found in the prototype.![]() The two first animation frames suggest that it might have been supposed to emerge from the ground. |
